Layoffs and factory closures have become increasingly prevalent in the early part of this year. Not only is the textile giant, Sritex Group, facing bankruptcy, but dozens of other factories have also shut down, sacrificing tens of thousands of workers. According to the latest verified data from the Ministry of Manpower's official One Data website, 3,325 workers were laid off in January 2025. However, there are no updated data reports for February-March 2025. Meanwhile, in the January-March 2024 period, the number of laid-off workers reached 12,395. This situation was most prevalent in DKI Jakarta, where 5,225 people lost their jobs during that period. However, reports from various labor unions indicate that at least tens of thousands of workers were affected by mass layoffs due to factory closures, employee downsizing, and factory relocations to other regions or countries.
The latest news comes from the coconut processing factory into coconut cream and dried grated coconut, PT Pulau Sambu or Sambu Group located in Indragiri Hilir Regency (Inhil) which is said to have laid off 1,800 workers. Deputy Minister of Manpower Immanuel Ebenezer said that his office had not received information regarding layoffs at the largest coconut processing company in Riau. However, he did not deny "I just heard the information, we will check it. If the raw material crisis, it does happen often, from imports it is difficult Customs also sometimes play there," said the man familiarly called Noel to Bisnis, Sunday (16/3/2025). Bisnis also tried to confirm with a number of labor unions such as KSPI President Said Iqbal and the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPN) Ristadi. Both admitted to having heard, but were still investigating the truth of the news.
Data from the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) indicates that 44,069 workers were laid off from 37 companies between January and February 2025. These 37 companies included factory closures, bankruptcy, termination of employment (PKPU), downsizing, and relocation. Some of the major companies that closed include the Sritex Group, which laid off 11,025 employees; PT Yamaha Music Piano, which laid off 1,110 workers; PT Sanken Indonesia, which laid off 900 workers; and PT Victory Ching Luh, which laid off 2,000 workers.
