China Responds to US Imposition by Raising Import Tariffs by 125%
The Chinese government officially raised import tariffs on US products to 125%, effective Saturday (April 12, 2025). This policy is in retaliation for the 145% tariff increase previously imposed by the United States on Chinese products.
"The US's imposition of extremely high tariffs on China seriously violates international trade and economic rules, basic economic laws, and common sense, and constitutes unilateral intimidation and coercion," China's Ministry of Finance said in a statement, as reported by Reuters.
Simultaneously, China's mission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) has filed an additional complaint against the new US tariffs. This complaint follows US President Donald Trump's April 10 executive order further increasing tariffs under the pretext of "reciprocity."
China's Ministry of Commerce also stated that the US decision to delay imposing high tariffs on other countries was the result of diplomatic pressure, including from China itself. However, they considered the move merely symbolic and did not demonstrate real goodwill.
"Even if the US continues to impose higher tariffs, they will no longer have any economic significance and will become a laughingstock in the history of the world economy," the Finance Ministry statement added.

Beijing announced this would be its final response to Trump. China stated it would no longer respond if Trump again raised tariffs on Chinese goods entering the US.
"If the US continues to play the numbers game with tariffs, China will not respond," he said.
Meanwhile, the BBC reported that China's new tariffs on US goods are the same as the US's current tariffs on Chinese goods. Donald Trump said he still hopes to reach a deal with Beijing, saying it would "end up being a very good outcome for both countries."
When Trump first announced his import tax scheme, China was hit with a 34% reciprocal tariff. Beijing retaliated by imposing a 34% tariff on American goods.
The US responded by raising its tariffs to a total of 104%, prompting China to raise its tariffs to 84%. The US responded again, and as it stands now, US tariffs on Chinese goods are now at 125%.
In addition to the 125% tariff, Chinese goods are also subject to an initial 20% tariff, bringing the total tariff on Chinese goods entering the US to 145%.
