Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again, Alert Status Raised to Alert Level!

The Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano, East Nusa Tenggara, has again shown increased activity with several eruptions, since Sunday (18/5/2025) at 11.29 WITA to 13.47 WITA.

The eruption produced an eruption column reaching 3,000 to 5,500 meters above the mountain's summit, or approximately 7,000 meters above sea level. The eruption column was observed to be dark gray and directed toward several points along the mountain's slopes.

The eruption was accompanied by a moderate to strong rumbling sound, audible from a nearby monitoring post. Visual data showed significant changes, and instrumental observations indicated an increase in the amplitude of the eruption tremors, suggesting the potential for a larger eruption than before.

As of the time of this report's writing, eruptive activity is still ongoing. Ash is reportedly being emitted continuously through gusts, indicating unstable volcanic activity. Residents near the volcano are urged to remain vigilant and follow directions from authorities and volcano monitoring agencies.

Citing a report from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), visual and instrumental analysis showed that the activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki remains relatively high. "Therefore, the volcanic activity level was raised from Level III (Alert) to Level IV (Warning) at 8:00 PM WITA ," PVMBG quoted the agency as saying on Monday (May 19, 2025).

Residents and tourists are advised to avoid activities within a 6-km radius and a 7-km northwest-northeast sector of the eruption epicenter, to remain calm and follow local government instructions. They are also urged to be cautious about trusting information from unknown sources.

In addition, communities around disaster-prone areas are expected to be aware of the potential for lava floods if heavy rain occurs, especially in river basins that originate at the peak of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, such as in Dulipali, Nobo, Hokeng Jaya, and Nurabelen.

Residents affected by ashfall are advised to wear masks or nose and mouth coverings to protect their respiratory tract. The local government is expected to continue coordinating with the Lewotobi Laki-laki Observation Post in Pululera Village and the Geological Agency's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
