Mount Rinjani - the ultimate destination for Indonesian climbers
Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia and is also part of the "Ring of Fire". Administratively, this mountain is located under four regencies: East Lombok, Central Lombok, West Lombok, and North Lombok. This mountain has an elevation of 3,726 m above sea level. For the people of Lombok Island, especially the Sasak and Balinese tribes, Mount Rinjani is considered a sacred place and the palace of the gods. On Mount Rinjani, there is the Rinjani National Park, which is located in a biogeographical transition area (Wallace's line), where the flora and fauna of Southeast Asia meet with the flora and fauna of the Australian region.

In the Mount Rinjani area, there is Segara Anak Lake, Barujari Mountain, Sangkareang Mountain, Waja Mountain, and several caves namely Susu Cave, Payung Cave, and Manik Cave. Segara Anak Lake is a source of spring water for the entire Lombok community. The water from this lake flows to almost most of the Lombok region. Agriculture around Lombok depends on the water from this lake. The lake, which has an area of 11,000 square meters with a depth of 230 meters and is located at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, is said by several customary elders in the Bayan area to function as a cooler for the surrounding volcanoes. This lake is estimated to have formed as a result of the eruption of Mount Samalas in 1257. Another opinion states that Segara Anak Lake emerged due to the eruption of Ancient Mount Rinjani.
Rinjani means high and upright. The meaning of the word seems to correspond with the geographical condition of Mount Rinjani, which is the second highest mountain in Indonesia. Furthermore, the name Mount Rinjani is very likely derived from the words Rara Anjani, which transformed into Renjani and subsequently became Rinjani as we know it today. In connection with the term Rara Anjani, in East Lombok, there is a village named Anjani Village. Similarly, there is a meeting hall in Mataram named Dewi Anjani Hall. This certainly shows how the community greatly respects and values that name, even though they no longer fully believe in the myth. However, the North Lombok government has made Mount Rinjani a symbol of the regency.
Rinjani is mentioned as the center of the cosmos, which is the cosmological orientation of the Sasak people in general, referring to it as "power." The center of the cosmos and the concept of the Sasak community represent the center of the Earth's magnetic strength and spiritual power, so all directions (in the context of civilization) are oriented towards it, for example, in the orientation of spatial planning. Rinjani, as an ecological symbol, is referred to as the peg of the earth that ensures the harmony of life in the preservation and balance of the environment. Rinjani is a pride of the North Lombok community as one of the active volcanoes that falls into the highest category in Indonesia.
The name of Mount Rinjani is said to originate from the name of Dewi Rinjani, who is the daughter of Datu Taun and Dewi Mas.

Mount Rinjani is located in the north of West Nusa Tenggara and is the second highest volcano in Indonesia with an elevation of 3,726 meters above sea level. It is part of the Mount Rinjani National Park and is surrounded by a lush forest and shrubland covering 76,000 hectares, providing a pristine view of Mount Rinjani.
Access to Lombok Island can be reached not only by land route using a direct bus from Jakarta, crossing by ferry twice (Bali Strait and Lombok Strait), but also by using an airplane.
Mount Rinjani has a crater with a width of about 10 km and there is a crater lake called Segara Anak Lake with a depth of about 230 m. With its blue water resembling that of the ocean, the water flowing from this lake forms a very beautiful waterfall that cascades through steep ravines. Many climbers fish in this lake because it is abundant with goldfish and tilapia.

There are 2 climbing routes to reach the summit of Rinjani, namely the Sembalun Route and the Senaru Route. The Sembalun Route is the favorite route for climbers because although the trek is longer, it can save 700 m of elevation.
On the Sembalun Trail, climbers will pass through a vast and beautiful savanna expanse. There are 3 resting posts on this trail, and after post 3, climbers will face a steep incline with a slope of about 60 degrees. Meanwhile, on the Senaru Trail, climbers will traverse a fairly dense and steep tropical forest. Similar to the Sembalun Trail, this trail also has 3 resting posts before eventually reaching the pelawangan post, which is commonly used as a camping area.

The charm possessed by Mount Rinjani is nearly perfect, so there is no doubt that Rinjani becomes an attraction that can captivate the interest of both international and domestic tourists to climb it. And climbing Mount Rinjani will certainly become an unforgettable memory and life experience.
So, for you nature lovers and mountain climbers, Rinjani is a must-visit destination on your checklist, and definitely at the top. The OLIV exploration team has visited Mount Rinjani and made it the 5th mountain in Indonesia that the OLIV exploration team has climbed.
