'A trip to New Zealand is not complete without visiting this !!!!!'
Opened in 1935, the Good Shepherd Church is the only church in Lake Tekapo and continues to be a place of worship for the local community. It was designed by Christchurch architect R.S.D. Harman, based on sketches by local artist, Esther Hope.
The builders of the Church are instructed that the site must not be disturbed, and even the matagouri bushes surrounding the building must be preserved. Stones that happen to be on the line of the wall must not be removed. The stones for the wall must be obtained from a radius of five miles from the location, and must be intact and not flaked.

The original roof was made of wooden shingles, but it had to be replaced with the boards that were available in 1957. The cupboard in the Vestry is made of wood from the Tekapo Bridge that was dismantled in 1954.
The laying of the foundation stone was carried out by H.R.H. Duke of Gloucester, on January 15, 1935. The church was officially inaugurated by the Bishop of Christchurch, Dr. Campbell West-Watson, on August 3, 1935. The Parish Vicar at that time was Reverend W.E.D. Davies, and its architect was Mr. R.S.D. Harman.
The Good Shepherd Church is interdenominational and services are held regularly throughout the year.
Why is the Good Shepherd Church famous?
The Church of the Good Shepherd by the shores of Lake Tekapo can be said to be one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand. A small stone church set in a stunning landscape, it is one of several memorial churches built throughout South Canterbury to commemorate the original Pakeha settlers in the area.
This charming church holds a special place in the hearts of the locals. Built to commemorate the Mackenzie pioneers, using local stone collected from 5 miles away from the site, with the aim of simply being part of the landscape. It is a valuable heritage building and also serves as a place of worship.

Local residents and visitors gather every Sunday, and the church welcomes Christians from all traditions, cultures, and backgrounds. This place is also still used for weddings and funerals, and visitors can request a personal tour directly from the church.
One of the most remarkable features of the Good Shepherd Church is the sense of connection, belonging, and being part of the natural environment. In this sacred place, you can let go, take a deep breath, and allow yourself to be renewed.
