Ahead of Eid, clothing sales at Beringharjo Market are sluggish, with sales down by 50 percent.

Ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2025, clothing sales at Beringharjo Market in Yogyakarta City experienced a significant decline compared to the same period last year. Kompas.com's monitoring five days before Eid showed that market conditions looked like normal days, both in terms of traffic to the location and crowds within the market. The market, which is usually crowded and busy before Eid, now looks deserted. Agung Riadi, a clothing seller at Beringharjo Market, said that market conditions leading up to Eid this year are quieter than after the Covid-19 pandemic. "After Covid, 2022, 2023, 2024 were good. But this year, even 15 days before Eid, it's still quiet until now. Usually, it's already busy," he said when met at his kiosk on Wednesday (March 26, 2025).

"Usually, the fifteen days before Eid are usually like Saturday and Sunday. I'm indicating a significant decline," he said. The lack of visitors has had a direct impact on his sales turnover. He estimates a 50 percent decline compared to last year. While he could earn Rp 2 million per day during previous Eid holidays, this time it only reached Rp 1 million. "Fifty percent of it is in the clothing manufacturing sector and other sectors. Last Eid, I could earn Rp 2 million, and as a trader, I could earn more," he said.

According to Agung, the current decline in sales is due to several factors, such as increased competition from online stores and economic uncertainty due to the government transition period. "The future of the economy is still uncertain, so people are likely choosing to save rather than spend like last year," he said. Another seller, Nining, shared the same sentiment. She said that the drop in sales leading up to Eid this year could reach more than 50 percent.

"Usually, it's crowded around Eid, but now you can run around," he said. Nining added that the market is usually bustling since the start of Ramadan, but this time it still looks deserted, like a normal day. "Before, even during fasting, I couldn't stand it," she said.
