Thug Organizations Could Bring Disaster to Indonesia, Businesspeople Cry!
The challenges in the business world are not only economic; the actions of thuggery by mass organizations also raise concerns. Many business owners are hesitant to operate due to fear of extortion by these thuggery organizations.
"This disruption is due to the government's lack of firmness with mass organizations. This could pose a threat to existing investments in Indonesia, as they become uncomfortable," Indef Executive Director Esther Sri Astuti told CNBC Indonesia, as quoted on Saturday (May 3, 2025).
Moreover, recently, many factories in labor-intensive industries, including textiles, have closed. This has created a new problem: unemployment.
Due to the difficulty of finding new jobs and the economic hardship, some people are suspected of seeking a shortcut by joining a community organization. However, Esther believes that some people's joining community organizations is due to other factors.
"This isn't due to economic hardship. There are indeed people who have a passion for community organizations," said Esther.
The government and law enforcement must act swiftly to stop this extortion practice. Otherwise, investors will choose other countries over Indonesia.
"But if this situation is allowed to continue, many factories will leave Indonesia, leading to increased layoffs, which will lead to more unemployment in Indonesia," Esther said.
Meanwhile, property observer Aleviery Akbar stated that the presence of mass organizations could make investors uncomfortable, including in the case of the BYD electric car development in Subang. Furthermore, it would increase costs for businesses, which could ultimately burden consumers or the public.
"Regarding thuggery in property development, it's actually nothing new; it's been going on for a long time, but it's gone viral because it involves a large electric vehicle factory in Subang. The economic costs of these mass organizations and thuggery are difficult to estimate, but they are clearly very disruptive to Indonesia's investment ecosystem," Aleviery said.
Previously, a number of businesspeople admitted to being concerned about the thuggery of mass organizations, such as demanding holiday allowances (THR) and project quotas.
They are the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) Shinta Kamdani, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Palm Oil Council (DMSI) Sahat Sinaga, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Hariyadi Sukamdani, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Truck Entrepreneurs Association (Aptrindo) Banten Syaiful Bahri, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Furniture and Craft Industry Association (HIMKI) Abdul Sobur, the Deputy General Chairperson of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Ian Syarief, and the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Truck Entrepreneurs Association (Aptrindo) Banten Syaiful Bahri.
