Ulun Danu - The beautiful Pura Besar in North Bali
Bedugul is a highland area on the northernmost side of Tabanan Regency that serves as a tourism center in Bali. This region is known for its cool air, terraced rice fields, and three large lakes; namely Beratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan. Each of these lakes plays a vital role in the life of the community, thus holding an important spiritual position according to the Hindu teachings embraced by the Balinese people. For this reason, at each of these lakes, there stands a special temple called Pura Ulun Danu. One of the three temples that is considered to have the most significant meaning and a long history is Pura Ulun Danu Beratan.
Literally, "pura ulun danu" means temple on the lake and can be described as a temple established as a place of worship for Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and the deities that protect a lake. Several lontar mention Pura Ulun Danu Beratan as a place of worship for Sang Hyang Widhi in his aspect as the God of Prosperity. This temple also serves as a place of worship for the goddess residing in Lake Beratan, namely Dewi Laksmi – who is the goddess of fertility and beauty. In addition, the existence of Lake Beratan as a water source for agricultural irrigation for the surrounding area gives it the status of Kahyangan Jagat, which is a public temple for Hindu worshippers from various regions, groups, and professions.
Until now, there has still been no definitive source that reveals the history of the establishment of Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. The only source found is the Lontar Babad Mengwi. It explains that Pura Ulun Danu Beratan was established by I Gusti Agung Putu around the year Saka 1556 or 1634 AD.
The function of Pura Ulun Danu as a place of worship is manifested by the presence of several worship buildings/pelinggih. Among these pelinggih, there are two buildings – namely Palebahan Pura Tengahing Segara and Palebahan Palinggih Lingga Petak/Ulun Danu, which are positioned jutting into the middle of the lake. The unique position of these two sacred buildings is rarely found in ulun danu temples established in other lakes in Bali. This makes the two sacred buildings in the middle of Lake Beratan not only have spiritual value but also high aesthetic value.
"In addition to serving as a place of worship for Hindus from many surrounding areas, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan has indeed become a center of attraction for tourism in Bedugul. The main attraction of this temple complex is none other than the Pelinggih Telengin Segara, which takes the form of an 11-tiered meru, and the Pelinggih Lingga Ulun Danu, which takes the form of a 3-tiered meru. The position and the natural panorama surrounding these two sacred buildings give them a high aesthetic value to be captured in photographs."
