Xi Jinping Calls Prabowo as Trump Ignites Tariff War
Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged phone calls with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday (13/4).
The communication was carried out by the two heads of state in the midst of a trade war because United States President Donald Trump raised US import tariffs like crazy.
The two heads of state congratulated each other on the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China.
As reported by Xinhua, on that occasion, Xi told Prabowo that Indonesia and China had achieved remarkable progress in bilateral relations and national friendship.
Xi recalled his two meetings with Prabowo last year, where they agreed to support each other's development vision, jointly advance efforts toward modernization, and build a China-Indonesia community with a shared future.
"As a major developing country and an important member of the Global South, cooperation between China and Indonesia has strategic significance and global influence," Xi said.
In the conversation, Xi also expressed his high regard for the development of China-Indonesia relations. He stated his readiness to forge deeper cooperation with Prabowo and strengthen multilateral strategic coordination.
On the occasion, Prabowo also congratulated Xi on 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and China.
Prabowo said Indonesia and China have established strong bilateral friendship and cooperation in the "five pillars" of politics, economics, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, maritime affairs, and security.
Prabowo also hopes that the two countries can continue to deepen cooperation and strengthen international friendship, thereby making a positive contribution to world peace and stability.
Xi and Prabowo's phone call came as China was gathering support from the European Union and Southeast Asia over the United States' strangling import tariffs.
Xi is scheduled to visit three of Indonesia's neighbors, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia, next week to strengthen ties with them. These three ASEAN countries are among those threatened with exorbitant import tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
