Early beds were more than just piles of straw or other natural materials (such as piles of palm leaves, animal skins, or dry ferns). An important change was raising them off the ground to avoid wind, dirt, and pests. During the Miocene period, which lasted from twenty-three to five million years ago, before the emergence of humans, apes began making beds consisting of sleeping platforms that included wooden pillows.
